Character Name (Western style); Shun Akiyama
Canon; Yakuza 4
Canon Point; Post-game
Age; 32
House; Odin
Power; Fire Magic
Personality; Akiyama. The mysterious loan-shark, as he's known around the red distract region of beautiful Tokyo. And for good reason that goes beyond his establishment and modus operandi. Akiyama is a very unique individual in this town of nobodies, vagabonds, and crooks. There is much about him that defies simple observation, and in fact works against the attentive. He puts on a very good face of being a aloof slacker with a mind for girls, if his running Elise is any indication. He doesn't come off as anything more complex very often, but when he does, it's usually double effective simply from the facade being dropped. Truth is, when you get past the simplicity, you have a something else altogether. Something genius, something cunning, something thoughtful and something magnificent. At the core of all of it is something that actually bothers Akiyama more than anything else, yet he is irrefutably defined by it. That is money. And though money has a great deal to do with greed, in this case the character of Akiyama and all his intricacies that stem from money are anything but greed-associated.
The first thing you need to know is that he came from money. Specifically, a bank job he took seriously. From that and surroundings money-based ventures, he grew an understanding for money, tracking money, and managing money. He worked hard and long, showing a dedication to it. And when he was ultimately framed and then forced to quit the bank, he spent his earnings trying to clear his name, to the point where his quest for vindication eventually saw him alone and homeless. He poured his life savings into the pursuit of justice, personal but justice all the same, showing that money never squandered his senses of accountability and righteousness. In actuality, it was an absence of money that led to the dulling of these traits. They're still there, but like most of Akiyama, hidden. Kept out of sight, so that he can fit into this den of thieves and yakuza.
He has a mind for money. He turned, through hard work, luck, and cunning, five million yen into one hundred billion yen in only a few years through trading and investments. And when he had reached that point, he had decided that he no longer needed more money. A rare trait for anyone that comes into cash after having none, to say the least. And instead, he opened business, Sky Finance, to give people in similar positions as his, the chance to turn their lives around. The down and beaten found him, and through him they could have their chance to rebuild their lives with the money he has to offer. Even more astounding is that in this business, he offers this money with no collateral and no interest, clearly indicating that none of this is for personal gain. At least, of a monetary kind. But he doesn't just give and give like someone with a golden heart. Akiyama is also an astute judge of character, or can be. He does not lend money out unless the customer passes one of his tests. He does this to prove that they were like him, and that they are serious about needing the money. Furthermore, anyone he takes on as a customer, be it at Sky Finance or at his host club, Elise, is someone he takes on entirely. Messing with them is a sure fire way to get a visit from Akiyama. It doesn't matter if you're some street punks, or the junior leader of the Majima family. You pick a fight with one of his people, or think you can shake him down for information on one of his clients, you've got yourself trouble.
He owns two business, Sky Finance and Elise, his hostess club. He visits other clubs, helps out with scouting and training, and manages a tight ship. He's got a mind for business and a mind for ladies. Even more intriguing is that he has a clear understanding of how the womanly way works, at least when it comes to making connections with patrons. Whether this is understanding from his own experience as a patron, leftover knowledge from the time he spent with Eri, or just earnings from that charisma he oozes isn't clear. Most likely, it's all of them combined. He has a clear soft spot for women, especially Eri and Lily, the latter of which looks nearly identical to his former love. He gets easily caught up on old thoughts of Eri, and develops strong feelings for Lily almost immediately. Come Lily's death, Akiyama is clearly deeply affected by it.
Akiyama knows Kamurocho. He knows the people, he knows the places, he knows the environment and he knows the business. He has a mind for observation and an understanding of people in all roles, most of the time. Even the ones that think they're playing him blind, he knows they think that. It may seem that he never acts on it, but in his own way he does. He's attentive, able to make out slight differences even in pigsties like his office. He's calculating, thinking ahead of opponents he hasn't even come face to face with yet. He knows just the right things to say when he needs things to get hot, or cool down. And when all else fails, he's adept. At fighting, at figuring a person out, and at making things happens. When it comes to talking the talk and walking the walk, he's light on the talk, and wouldn't mind brushing off the walking for a good nap. But he can throw down with the best of them.
Another important element about Akiyama is how he goes about spending money that he has. Which is to say he does not spend any of the money he has in his safe on anything but the people that come to Sky Finance. This frugal nature when it comes to disposable income shows that he really doesn't have a personal interest in his money. It is, all of it, meant for the people that prove they need it. People that deserve their second chance at life. He even goes so far as to scatter it to the wind at the end of the game in a trap set to defeat the antagonists, which itself helps provide a second chance to people that the system had done away with for whatever reason they could whip up. Even if it is important to have, Akiyama will only spend what he earns from people around town, or from selling things he finds.
In short, Akiyama is a simple guy with a whole lot of depth underneath. Chances are, if you think you got this man figured out, then he's got you right where he wants you. He's a good guy through and through, but he's a guy with principles that he remains unwaveringly faithful to. He's got an eye for the ladies, enjoys a good smoke and a better nap, and won't hesitate to kick your teeth in if you're stepping in on his business in any negative way. Just remember when you're having that drink, talking about whatever, and enjoying a smoke, that this guy is getting a feel for you without ever letting it on.
